Benefits for Certified Volunteer Firefighters
LOCAL FIREFIGHTER RELIEF FUND – Fund maintained by CFR with State support. Available to assist financially any NCSFA Certified Volunteer Firefighter in active service for a sickness or injury contracted in the line of duty and to provide reasonable support to family or dependents of a firefighter who may lose their life in the line of duty by accident or sickness. MEMBERSHIP ASSISTANCE FUND – Fund maintained by Corolla Fire & Rescue to provide assistance to members in need and fund member-related expenditures where the use of “county budget” funds is not practical, efficient or appropriate generally.
LINE-OF-DUTY BENEFIT – for deaths in the line of duty, your family would receive a NC State Line-of-Duty Death Benefit, the Federal PSOB Benefit, and benefits under NCSFA insurance plans. Additionally, NCSFA will pay educational expenses for your children to any state-supported university or community college.
EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS – in addition to line-of-duty death benefit (above) $240,000 a year is available for scholarships for NCSFA firefighter members and graduating high school seniors who are the child of an active, retired or deceased NCSFA certified firefighter. Certain training grants also available.
ACCIDENTAL DEATH & DISMEMBERMENT – Coverage is 24 hours per day for on-duty and off-duty events. Policy benefit is $25,000. All members, including retirees on a department roster, receive this coverage.
ACCIDENT & SICKNESS POLICY – Coverage is for line-of-duty deaths or injuries and line-of-duty related sickness resulting in death or injury.
NCSFA PENSION BENEFIT – Pension benefit based on years of service (i.e., while on active volunteer department roster) for “career” volunteers with 20 years of service. Minimum training requirements (36 hours per year) to remain on active roster. https://www.myncretirement.com
FIRST RESPONDER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM – 24/7 confidential help for firefighters and their families for issues such as stress management, depression, family conflict, grief and loss, addictions, child/elder care. http://ncsfa.com/first-responder-assistance-program
